Family Therapy

Every family has occasions where they don’t get along, but some issues can be difficult to resolve on their own. Family therapy is a type of psychotherapy that helps families resolve conflicts and communicate more effectively. Sessions typically last about 50 minutes and can include one or all family members.

The therapist helps the family identify a goal and work towards it. This may be related to arguing less, building more patience, or spending more quality time together. Once the family reaches that goal, they’ll discuss what other areas of their lives they would like to develop.  Some families find it helpful to continue therapy for longer periods of time while other’s attend for 5-6 weeks at a time to address needs as they arise.

When a particular family member is causing much of the stress within the family, it is often helpful for the individual to have their own therapist as well.

Family therapists help families by creating more understanding and acceptance of  one another. They explore family roles and behavior patterns to get at the root of the issues that are causing strife. Families that learn how to express their thoughts and feelings productively are better able to cope with stressful situations.

When searching for the right family therapy specialist, there are key things to look for. Mayo Clinic offers several things to consider when choosing a therapist:

  • Education and experience  Family therapists may be psychologists, clinical social workers, or licensed therapists. They have graduate or postgraduate degrees and have a specialty in family therapy.
  • Location and availability  It’s easier to get to sessions when the office is close to home or work and can accommodate the family’s schedule. We offer sessions during the evenings to make timing easy for parents.
  • Length and number of sessions  During the first appointment ask questions about the length, duration, and frequency of appointments. We are flexible and want to make sure that you feel comfortable with the time you spend in our office.
  • Fees and insurance  Discuss the cost of sessions and whether your insurance will absorb some or all of the cost. We provide invoices to make insurance reimbursement easier for you.
