Play Therapy

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a type of therapy to nurture a child’s emotional expression and ability to cope with stressors. Through the use of sand tray, arts and crafts, action figures and dolls, children are able to fully explore their sense of self. At every visit, the play therapist carefully prepares for your child’s visit. And in the initial sessions, children build trust with the therapist.Additionally, the selection of a child’s toys to communicate is critical to understanding their world. Over time, the therapist can use toys and expressive activities to identify and help the child resolve social, emotional, behavioral and other developmental issues.

How Does Play Therapy Work?

Patterns emerge across a child’s play that suggest how they manage his or her feelings. Our child therapists identify a child’s way of coping by observing these patterns. These themes are then used to encourage children to put their feelings into words. In this way, children practice their own voice, and they are then able to communicate their experiences to others.  An increased sense of self, awareness, self-compassion, and patience for others can be fostered in this way. Thus, play therapy allows individuals to build emotional tools to benefit them through the lifespan.

Through play therapy, a child can give insight into what they are experiencing. Even if they do not have the words to express themselves, a child’s emotional intelligence develops in play. Therefore, children learn to express their needs, wants and feelings. It works because play is a natural form of learning and expression for children.
