ASD – Autism Individual Therapy
Several types of psychotherapy and individual counseling have been shown to be effective for individuals with diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Asperger’s. This includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Our psychologist, Dr. Colby Carter, has extensive experience providing individual therapy for pre-teens, teens, and young adults with an ASD diagnosis. Additionally, Dr. Mae Casanova has exceptional training in adolescent development, body image, self-esteem, and peer interactions with teen girls in the academic setting. Our psychologists support kids in developing self-awareness related to peer interactions, coping for emotionally challenging situations, and personal and academic future plans.
Our comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations for autism identification include:
- Cognitive testing (e.g., including IQ, executive functioning, working memory, verbal skills, non-verbal skills)
- Assessment of adaptive functioning
- Academic screening (and more in-depth academic testing if requested),
- Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition (ADOS-2), the gold standard autism assessment.
We also communicate with teachers, schools, and families to ensure that we are carefully considering all areas of the child’s development. Dr. Eriko Lapoint, Dr. Colby Carter, and Dr. Susan Gehrig offer psychoeducational evaluations for children and teens suspected of being on the Autism Spectrum.
Erika Smith, M.Ed., BCBA is our parenting expert and behavioral consultant with expertise in Autism Spectrum Disorder. She supports parents in developing a plan for successful interactions, including peer play, repetitive behaviors, communications skills (e.g., eye contact, gestures), and sensory sensitivities. She provides in-home consultations, academic consultation for the classroom setting, IEP reviews, one-to-one training, and assessments.
